New York Street Games - The Movie

Yo

Now your talking baby! Stoopball. I am Matt's Mom and the house I grew up in had a 6 step stoop and it was the best for this game. Especially hitting the edge of the steps because you gained more points by hitting just the tip. Regards,

Fascinating. I'm very curious how it is that you kept score? How many points did you get for hitting the tip? Was it for hitting the tip or for how it bounced, and hitting the tip caused a better bounce?

The rules for the game we (still) play (every summer in WI) can be found at http://www.stoopball.net (click on the rules link at the left).

Is this anything like the game you played (presumably in the city)?

From what I can remember it scored higher when just the tip was hit

very interesting. the game we play relies more on the field, but we also have fields to play on, and fancy ones at that.

I guess it prolly was easier to score based on hit when playing improptu games in front of someone's house, especially when that location was subject to change.

As a kid I never played stoopball, but remember playing curbball, and it was all based on the catch. more like a game of 500 without a bat, it wasn't really about getting it past the "fielders", more like batting practice.

I had 8 steps at the house in my old neighborhood. We made our own rules on how the game was to be played. It also depended on how many steps were in a stoop. Each step had a different point value. Lowest step was 10 points and hitting in between the next step or catching it on a bounce would be a different point value that we we set from the start of the game. The higher the step, the higher the point. The last or highest step hit on the edge and caught in the air scored 100 points. If we missed three times in catching the ball....we were out and it would be the next players turn until he missed. The winner was whoever reached the usual play of 1000 points first.
