Only those that grew up in NY can understand the meaning of this:

THERE IS NO NORTH AND SOUTH.
IT'S 'UPTOWN' OR 'DOWNTOWN'.
AND EAST OR WEST IS 'CROSS-TOWN'.
YOU RIDE IN A SUBWAY CAR WITH NO AIR CONDITIONING
JUST BECAUSE THERE ARE SEATS AVAILABLE.
YOU TAKE THE TRAIN HOME AND YOU KNOW EXACTLY WHERE ON
THE PLATFORM THE DOORS WILL OPEN THAT WILL LEAVE YOU RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE EXIT STAIRWAY.

YOU KNOW WHAT A 'REGULAR' COFFEE IS. IT'S NOT MANHATTAN, IT'S "THE CITY."

By
John Murgo

Prelude

John and his best friend Anthony were sitting on John's deck looking out at the ocean and the beach. It was a wonderful spring day; not too hot or cold; with a nice soft breeze coming off the ocean; it was a perfect day. The two friends got together about once a month for lunch; sometimes they would go out or on a nice day like today, Anthony would bring some pastry and Italian bread from a bakery from the old neighborhood. John would put out a dis… Continue

Did you go to PS 71? You must have if you lived on 7th street, my uncle had Italian Restaurant on Ave. D, between third and fourth streets it was called “The Casabella” I worked there from when I was old enough to cut peppers until I became the chef. I knew some girls from the projects, one’s name Dee and she had a brother, and I think his name was Tony. Where do you live now?

I know that I did not go to school with you, but I'm also from the lower east side. I grew up on 7st between C&D and I also went to Seward Park. I enjoy seeing people writing and talking about the Lower east side. It is a big part of my life even if I don't live there anymore. The lower east side made me who I am today.

To all of my NEW YORK Family and online friends,
Please hold all your e/mail's to a minimum, as we will be leaving for Maui Hi on Sunday morning 9/7/09 and will be returning on 9/18/09. And I don’t think I will be spending to much time on the computer. Have a wonderful two weeks I know we will.

Thankyou my friend for reaching out to a fellow new yorker..and I love your post, No North or South, Nothing I have read has been any truer then that....I write this as I speak it, like a new yorker. I have lived all over the US and everyone that I have met can tell you where I come from....80th and york ave...born and raised, worked for the grocer and got up at 4am, at 12yrs old, to go to the market in the Bronx, delevered blocks of Ice, and in the winter coal, from the back of Mr. Shamenti's truck....man thats New York, and I love it.

Hello John,
Sorry for not responding quicker but I have been so busy. Unfortunately, I am not in contact with my schoolmate Margret Vasille since graduation who lived on Monroe Street. I figured ....thought perhaps by chance you were friends. Keep in touch. Until I hear from you Ciao Luv. Angela
