Christmas Sucks. Stoopball ROCKS!

There is probably going to be a lot of people seeing this page for the first time, saying: "What is all this?" Stoopball League of America? People still play this game? For real?

Yes we do. And quite heartily.

Every year myself and a couple hundred of my closest friends gather in Clinton, WI for the World Championships of the Stoopball League of America.

Surf over to http://www.stoopball.net/ for some good info, and if you ever happen to be anywhere near Clinton in mid to late July, we hope you stop by, you won't regret it. In fact, you may never miss another.

I loved playing stoop ball. It was difficult in the projects since our stoop had a lot of people going in and out. But as kids we always found a way. In our play area we had a giant cement turtle. We could hit the edge of the turtles shell and it made a perfect stoop edge. The best thing I remember about our neighborhood was that the boys always let the girls play if they were good enough and didn't cry if you got hurt. I always played.

The word stoop was originally a dutch word the spelling of which was stoup. It referred of course to the steps in front of a house. New york being the first dutch colony in the new world must be the birthplace of the game. the spelling changed over the years but not much. Philip Van Cott artist

Final Appeal for Data:

Hey Stoopballers,

Eddie Holahan here. We’re going to get the 25th Anniversary Calendar to the printer in a couple of weeks. It’s coming along nicely but I can still use anything you’ve got to send me, in particular…

1. your favorite Stoopball photo
2. dates of significance, birthdays, important games etc.
3. quotes of significance (relating to Stoopball)
4. something I’ve forgotten that you think would be cool to have in the Calendar

Please send me what you’ve got in the next five days so that I’ll have time to play with it.

Thanks again for all your help.
Regards,

eh

Wow. I thought stoopball was a city game? Do you know where and when it was invented?

Hey babies,
Ed Holahan here. I am so looking forward to the Championships!
I posted a standing invitation somewhere on the website (us old guys are unused to this). If you find it, read it, and let me know what you think.
I'll see you soon. Be wonderful.
