Anyone remember "black tar beach" - baby oil and iodine - a chair and/or towel - 3 hours later - you had a better color than going to Orchard and/or Jones Beach.
I loved Jones Beach. The waves were awsome. Me, 10/11 y.o., would run into the waves and get rolled back to the sand. Never was I scared of the undertow. I rolled with it. Now living in FL, 40 yrs. later, you can't get me in the water when the winds are hi. The undertow is so strong that it takes you out to sea. Forget about it. Maybe it's the same as Jones Beach's undertow, but what do you know about danger at that young age? And, it's the same ocean - the Atlantic. Pardon my ignorance, but are the waves still the same at Jones B? I've been gone since 1980. How's Orchard Beach? When I got older, I discovered that Orchard Beach was not an ocean but a bay - nasty as it was/still is?
Your Mother always knew when you where on the roof, by the tar on your feet; or the bottom of your shoes, by the mark's on the floor when you came in to the house with that sun burn;
I never burned I jyst got dark. But She always knew when I was on the roof...
